Cremation Urn Wood Types – Walnut

There are several varieties of walnut wood from which our urns are made, depending on the manufacturer. Walnut is a dark wood, and most American walnut varieties grow with either a straight grain or a very distinctive and highly figured grain. Both grain types result in a beautiful finished product, and you can see whether a particular wood urn is made with straight-grain or variable-grain walnut by looking closely at any product photo with decent resolution.

The hardness, strength, stability, and heaviness of walnut wood contribute to its legacy as one of the largest hardwood trees grown in the United States and our most popular type of wood for our funeral urns. Below you will see a small sample selection of just a few of our walnut urns. The images below will give you a good idea of the variety of shades and grain textures available, as well as the number of different wood urn designs that we sell.

Cremation Urn Wood Types – Radiata Wood

Radiata pine is classed as a medium-density softwood. Radiata pine clearwood (wood that is free of defects such as knots, holes or other blemishes) is one of the world’s best clearwoods and one of the world’s most widely planted plantation species because it has the ability to grow to a large diameter faster than almost any other tree species.

When planed to a smooth finish, the wood is creamy-coloured, with stripes created by the contrast between wood grown early in the annual growth season (softer and paler) and that grown later (harder and darker). The wood darkens over time with exposure to light.

Many of our Bolivian urns are made from Radiata pine wood; here is one with and a second without a stain:

New Wood Urns

A roundup of new wooden urns at Urns Northwest:

New Maple Wood Urns with Engraved Scene

Music Urn
New Wood Urn Series

These wood cremation urns feature finely engraved scenes in a walnut frame on the top of the urn. The white maple, when engraved, results in a stunningly contrasted design against the light grain of the natural hardwood urn box. These wooden urns can also be built with a hinged lid and a 3/4″ deep memory chest area on the top of the urn, perfect for letters, photos, jewelry, or other small memorabilia items.

Scenes in this series include the above pictured Wood Urn with Music Scene, as well as:

New Wood Companion Urns
We’ve expanded our companion urn selection to include several of our standard urns that can now be made in the companion or double urn size, usually holding about 400 cubic inches of cremains to accomodate the remains of two individuals.

New Dimensional Inlay Wood Urns

Wood Urn with Horse Scene
Horse Riding Home Wood Urn

New to our Dimensional Inlay Series of wood urns are two twists on the classic Road Home scene. Pictured above is our Horse Scene Road Home Urn, in oak, featuring a cowboy on his horse for that final ride home, and below is the same scene with a motorcyclist, pictured in walnut. The entire series of wood urns can be made in your choice of oak or walnut hardwoods.
