Sympathy meals are a wonderful way of showing support, love, and solidarity with a bereaved family. Sharing food – especially a homemade meal – or showing care by sending a meaningful gift will often be remembered long after the flowers have faded and the words of a eulogy forgotten.
For those who have experienced meal sharing, perhaps through a church ministry after a surgery or from a mom’s play date group following the birth of a little one, these meals can provide a sense of comfort in continuity with the other ups and downs of life. For those who have never experienced this tradition before, receiving a sympathy meal can have an incredible impact in the midst of grief.
If you’re making, delivering, or organizing sympathy meals after a funeral, here is a guide to help you keep it simple and heartfelt while taking into account the many considerations of unique individuals and families in the midst of grief.

Organizing Sympathy Meals
My neighbor has health problems. I regularly make her soup or dinner when I know that she’s particularly down, and she always loves that. However, when we were first friends, I made her a batch of muffins, and they weren’t very well received because they contained sugar. So many people nowadays have one food issue or another, it does intimidate me to make something for someone without speaking to them first. I’m always worried I’m making something that they’re not actually going to be able to eat.
Tips for organizing meals
- Find out about allergies, intolerances, and dislikes
- Ask the family if they would be open to invitations to dinner at a friend’s house. Sometimes what people really need is a break from the home and some good company!
- If most friends and family use email or are on social media, consider an online meal sharing calendar. Most of these are free, and include plenty of features such as letting people to sign up for specific dates, sending out reminders, and helping to avoid duplicate meals. Here are some popular ones:
- To friends and family who cannot personally deliver a meal, suggest sending gift certificates for a favorite restaurant, especially ones that deliver or do “to go”
- To those who feel daunted by cooking, suggest a bag of ready-to-eat groceries such as fresh cut fruits and veggies, bread and cheese, or a hot roasted chicken from the deli

Making Sympathy Meals
Before you begin
- Consider sending the family an “order form” of 3-5 dishes you are prepared to make, and let them choose
- Pay careful attention to allergies and intolerances
- Know the number of people in the house – often, extended family or friends will be staying
- Make enough food for the entire family to have leftovers for lunch the next day
- Or, consider making a second meal to go into the freezer for a later date
- Include heating instructions in a sympathy note
- If you bring freezer meals, make sure they have a crock pot. If they don’t, get them one
- Don’t forget to include drinks and dessert

Cold Meal Recipes
When my grandfather died, we appreciated all the thoughtful food gifts, but what was one of the biggest treats for us was a wonderful fresh fruit salad. We had casseroles and other rich foods coming out our ears, and we were all so upset that the best we could do was pick at anything. So the fresh fruit was a refreshing change from the foods with all the cheese and cream as well as being a little more easy to stomach, given our collective state of mind. So I would say something refreshing and wholesome, like fresh fruit and other things they can pick and nibble on but don’t necessarily have to sit down and prepare a plate of.
When my mom died, we appreciated the meat and cheese platters. It was easy to assemble a sandwich and go about our business. The fresh fruit salad is a great idea too… any salad really.
While a few commentators in the blogosphere have objected to the idea of a cold sympathy meal (cold being reminiscent of the deceased, while warmth conveys life and vitality), most people who have received sympathy meals quickly tire of the same slew of hot soups, casseroles, lasagna, and chicken dishes.

Delivering Sympathy Meals
I’m a big believer in going to funerals..I have been to funerals of people I did not know (they had been teachers at the school where I live) and if it is a friend who is grieving I bring my “funeral goodie bag”. Mints, tissues, lip balm and lots of really good chocolate.
Then a month or so later, I call and say that I am going to drop off dinner. I’ve found that you get lots of support immediately when you are mostly numb but it really is important to feel support later when it really hits you. When my father died suddenly it was those people months later who asked about how I was doing and mentioned my dad that really stick in my mind.
There are many different elements to each situation involving the loss of a loved one. Some people have family staying or dropping by all the time, and would appreciate a meal dropped off on the porch so that they do not have to deal with another visitor. Others may have recently moved to the area and would be surprisingly enthusiastic if you offered to stay and share the meal together.
Some people are night owls and would love for you to stay and play video games; others are early risers and would be blessed by a small gift of good coffee, tea, or cocoa. Some people feel as if everyone is avoiding them; others wish everyone would. Some people want a hug or someone to talk to; others do not.
When in doubt, ask, and be ready to oblige any answer without taking offense.
Tips for delivering sympathy meals
- Use disposable containers to bring the meal – this keeps the recipients from having to wash and return dishes. Purchase simple plastic containers or foil dishes at your local discount or “dollar store”, save jars and plastic containers from store-bought foods (Costco-size containers are useful), get bulk packs of foil pans on Amazon, or include a complete set of food storage containers as a gift. Be sure to note that you do not need the containers back.
- Consider including paper plates and plastic utensils so there are no dishes to wash
- Include a detailed list of all ingredients; this helps to address any potential allergens or dietary issues
- Include a few pantry-stocking extras: a box of mac & cheese, crackers, a roll of paper towels, toilet paper (seriously!!)
- If there are kids, a simple gift such as stuffed animals, small toys, puzzles, or coloring books can provide a little cheer
- Consider including a small gift: a favorite book (stick with what you know they like – avoid books on grief & loss); a DVD or a gift card for streaming video; gift cards for coffee or a favorite restaurant
- Skip the flowers and offer babysitting services instead
- Find out the best time to drop off the meal
- Call or text when you’re on your way over
- Be equally ready to stay and chat or drop and go
I think it’s also nice to take cereal and milk for breakfast – things you usually pop out for or need to replentish regularly. And sometimes I also bring toilet paper. Especially when they have a house-full. You just don’t want to have to go to the store for toilet paper and milk….
What Sympathy Meals Communicate
When we hand you a dish with homemade lasagna and a salad kit, or spaghetti casserole, or a turkey hot dish, we’re not merely saying “be warm and well fed”. Here are a few ideas we want you to understand and consider while you’re sitting down to eat it.
1. Please enjoy this meal.
“Be warm and well fed” isn’t the only thing we are saying, but we are saying it. We want your family to have this meal to eat today and we hope your stomachs are filled and you find it delicious and satisfying.
2. We stand with your family.
As you walk through this crisis, please know that you are not alone. If you’ve just had a baby, we are joyful with you. If you’ve just lost a baby, we are grieving with you. We aren’t experiencing what you are, but we are on your team.
3. It’s understandable if you don’t feel like making a meal.
Here’s a thought that I hope no one in a church ever thinks: “My kids have just lost a grandparent, and now they have a mom who can’t even put together a supper.” You’re in crisis mode. It’s reasonable that you have your mind on other things. It’s reasonable if building up the inertia to cook dinner is difficult right now.
4. We want your family to have times of rest.
Long hospital visits have a cost. A new baby is hard work. Preparing for a funeral is a complex challenge. Please give yourself a break as you sit down to eat this.
5. Your God wants you to feel loved by the church.
So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:10 ESV)
Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. (Romans 12:13)
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: (1 Peter 4:8-10)
As we’re giving you a meal, we’re doing what God is telling us to do. He wants this for you.
6. We hope you are experiencing moments of joy.
Another thought I don’t want anyone in church to think: “My spouse is in extreme discomfort because of the radiation therapy. It’s not right if I feel any bits of momentary happiness.” Yes, it is okay. It’s right there in Second Corinthians: “Sorrowful yet always rejoicing”. As we hand the meal to you, we’re praying that you’ll be surprised by joy (not to mention peace) that passes all understanding but is nevertheless real and God given. And maybe this meal can be a part of it.
7. Please know Grace exists.
When a gift is given, it’s not uncommon for the receiver to say, “Oh, you didn’t have to do that.” This is true. There is no law or moral code that says we must give meals. Just like there was no law or moral code that says that God had to provide a way of salvation for us. But He did, at great cost for His Son. A much greater cost than that of this meal. If you are feeling like you don’t deserve to receive it, remember: It doesn’t matter.
